The Importance of High-Quality Asphalt
High-quality asphalt is a cornerstone in the construction of durable and reliable roads, and its importance cannot be overstated. Roads are the arteries of transportation, connecting communities, facilitating commerce, and ensuring the smooth flow of daily life. To fulfill these crucial roles, the asphalt used in road construction must be of the highest quality. It serves as the road's protective surface, bearing the weight of countless vehicles and enduring the impact of varying weather conditions. High-quality asphalt not only provides a smooth and safe driving experience but also offers exceptional durability, preventing premature degradation, potholes, and cracks. This, in turn, minimizes maintenance and repair costs, making it a cost-effective choice over the long term. Additionally, superior asphalt contributes to reduced fuel consumption and vehicle wear and tear, promoting both economic and environmental benefits. In essence, high-quality asphalt is the linchpin in creating dependable, long-lasting, and well-maintained road networks that are the lifeblood of modern society.
Our Role in Asphalt Manufacturing
What We Do
Carmeuse produces both coarse limestone aggregates and fine limestone sand to be used in the production of high-quality asphalt. The use of limestone in asphalt production can minimize the risk of poor adhesion or stripping which can result in premature cracking, rutting, and reduced pavement.
When mixed with other materials like bitumen and fine aggregates, limestone provides the asphalt with the necessary strength and resistance to wear and tear. It also enhances the stability and load-bearing capacity of the pavement, ensuring that it can withstand the weight and traffic loads imposed by vehicles. Limestone aggregates contribute to the overall quality and longevity of the asphalt, reducing the need for frequent maintenance and repairs, which ultimately saves costs and resources in road construction and maintenance.
In areas where a stripping prone aggregate, such as granite, must be used we offer the leading anti-stripping agent to address this concern. Hydrated lime added at dose rate of just 1% (by weight of the aggregate) can alleviate the stripping potential between the stone and binder and eliminate the many adverse impacts that stripping can cause.
How it Helps
- Consistency – Stone consistency gives additional control of the mix and eliminates the risk of impurities.
- Improved Quality & Durability – Limestone can increase toughness and strength characteristics to withstand traffic induced stresses.
- Reduced Stripping: The risk of stripping is reduced by lime and limestone’s ability to improve adhesion which can prevent cracking and rutting.
