As a leading provider of lime and limestone, Carmeuse provides customers with specialty products that are less common in the industry and specific product mixes for your applications.
For certain applications in steelmaking and flue gas treatment, there arises a need for specialized lime and limestone products. For these instances, Carmeuse can provide specialty products to suit the customer’s needs and applications including FUSITE, DOLOPEL®, Magnesium Enhanced Lime (MEL), and Certified Recycled products. Many of the products’ characteristics are customized based upon the needs of the application including composition, particle sizing and packaging.
Specialty Products We Provide
DOLOPEL
Dolopel is a dead-burned dolomitic quicklime that is mixed with a variety of other raw materials, including iron oxide, to produce a product that has high strength and heat durability. It is primarily used in the manufacturing of refractory bricks. The refractory bricks are then used as a lining to retard the heat from penetrating and damaging outer shells of steel ladles, furnaces, and kilns. Dolopel can also be used for soil amendment in agricultural applications
Dead-burned dolomitic quicklime is stone that is calcined (fired) at higher temperatures to process all of the stone into oxide. When this occurs, it is less chemically reactive due to “over-firing” and no longer reacts with water, thus the term “dead-burned.” Dead-burned dolomitic quicklime is also added to the steel bath to prevent magnesium from being pulled from the refractory bricks, thus reducing breakdown and extending the brick’s life.
FUSITE
Fusite is a granular dolomitic refractory material made of both magnesium oxide and calcium oxide, which is iron infused during the manufacturing process, and then can be coated with oil to obtain specific performance characteristics. Fusite is used in “ramming” and patching mixes for coating the furnace to protect the refractory and extend its life. The additional iron and oil helps with sintering so that the Fusite sticks (or “fuses”) to the refractory. Also used in the hearth, Fusite can be tamped into the bottom of the furnace as a “banking material” to manage wear. Carmeuse quarries and sizes raw materials to exact specifications, along with obtaining the added materials from quality resources.
Magnesium Enhanced Lime (MEL)
Magnesium enhanced lime plays a critical role of keeping coal-fired boilers in environmental compliance. It is used in wet flue gas desulphurization (FGD) to reduce sulfur dioxide and other acid gases. MEL is derived from a high calcium limestone that is naturally higher in magnesium content, but not enough to be classified as dolomite. Additionally, this limestone is unique in that the calcium and magnesium are not bonded together, as is the case in typical dolomitic limestone. This particular chemistry allows use within a specifically designed wet FGD system where the separated calcium magnesium enhances sulfur dioxide scrubbing.
Certified Recycled Products
Pre-Consumer Recycled Content (PCR) products play an important role in industrial sustainability efforts by diverting material from manufacturing waste streams. Products that have received PCR validation help reduce environmental impact of building materials by conserving natural resources and lowering the amount of waste sent to landfills.
Customized Mixtures
Carmeuse has a broad range of facilities across the United States, and this allows us to, when necessary, provide customized mixtures of lime products to customers with specific needs. This may include specific ratios of magnesium and/or calcium, color, purity, or sizing. Speak to one of our sales representatives to discuss your specific need.
