Description:
Calciment® LKD, or lime kiln dust, is a fine powder containing a unique combination of calcium oxide (CaO), magnesium oxide (MgO) and pozzolans. With similar attributes to quicklime and Portland cement, Calciment lime kiln dust is an effective reagent for drying, modifying, and stabilizing soils, sediments, sludges and waste streams.
Benefits:
- Cost-effective alternative to traditional chemical reagents or other treatment options
- Saves time and money on the jobsite by reducing downtime due to wet conditions and extending the construction season to work even in cold weather
- Calciment LKD meets the requirements of the U.S. Green Building Council’s Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) Program for New Construction and Major Renovation as Recycled Content – Pre-Consumer Material
- Transforms unworkable soil into a stable material, eliminating the need to remove and replace
- Improves engineering properties, such as reduced plasticity and shrink/swell potential to help meet geotechnical specifications
- Fast hydration (due to small particle size) eliminates the need for mellowing and additional mixing after application
- Available in a variety of packaging options to meet your jobsite requirements: pneumatic or dump bulk truck loads, supersacks, rail or barge
Calciment LKD is available through Mintek Resources, a member of the Carmeuse Group.

Calciment LKD Production
Lime kiln dust (LKD) is a co-product of the lime manufacturing process. It begins when limestone, which has been crushed and sized, is heated in a kiln at extremely high temperatures to produce a reactive oxide. This process, known as calcination, forms quicklime (CaO) and fine particles of lime kiln dust.
Calciment LKD is a bulk dry powder containing a mix of calcium oxide (CaO), magnesium oxide (MgO) and pozzolans. Like quicklime, Calciment LKD reacts with moisture, and needs to be handled properly from production to the point of application. Calciment LKD is available in a variety of packaging options to meet your jobsite requirements including pneumatic or dump bulk truck loads, supersacks, rail or barge. Uses for Lime Kiln Dust
Calciment LKD is a versatile alkali (high pH) product commonly used for drying, modifying, solidifying, and fixating material.
- Drying – Calciment lime kiln dust is a fast-acting drying agent for reducing moisture content in wet soils
- Modifying – Calciment LKD acts upon soil’s clay components, modifying their surface mineralogy and reducing plasticity, and shrink/swell potential to improve engineering properties
- Stabilizing - Calciment LKD can form permanent strength gains that can be accounted for in project design
- Environmental Solidification and Stabilization – Solidification and stabilization solutions for environmental remediation and hazardous and non-hazardous waste treatment. Calciment LKD is used to neutralize acidic materials, including heavy metal waste fixation by adjusting pH and reducing metals’ solubility
Drying agents like quicklime and Calciment® lime kiln dust (LKD) accelerate the drying of soils. However, to determine what solution is best for your jobsite, several factors should be taken into consideration. Such as:
- Specific project goals and timeline
- Soil type
- Soil plasticity
- In-situ moisture content
- Swell potential
- Short / long-term strength of soil (compressive strength, shear strength, CBR, and resilient modulus)
- Contaminants
- Organic content
