Description:
Carmeuse is a leading producer of ground calcium carbonate. Calcium carbonate (CaCO3) is a very common chemical compound making up 4% of the earth’s crust and is the primary constituent in limestone. While it is abundant, not all limestone is suitable for ground calcium carbonate (GCC) production due to impurities. Calcium carbonate is one of the most useful and versatile materials known to humans and has many practical applications such as use in flooring (carpet, luxury vinyl tile, stone plastic composite), paint, adhesives, paper, plastics, rubber, asphalt roofing, and many other purposes, including agriculture.
Carmeuse Benefits:
- High CaCO3 purity for consistent and quality compounds
- Cuts costs by reducing active ingredients needed while adding desirable characteristics such as energy efficiency, fire retarding, sound proofing, strength, and durability
- Multiple GCC plant locations with delivery services offered
- Bagged 50lb and Super Sacks (1 ton) available at specific locations
- Dry bulk handling system equipment and services offered
- Multiple product offerings certified 100% pre consumer recycled content for sustainability

Ground Calcium Carbonate Production
Ground calcium carbonate (GCC) is produced through a multistage process that results in rock powder.
Stone is mined from solid rock formations often in underground mines. The calcium carbonate is then transported out of the mine and processed through a series of crushers. Once crushed to a suitable size, often around an inch in diameter the stone is conveyed to the mills for further processing. Particle size is determined by the amount of time in the mill, with finer sizes requiring more processing or time in the mill. GCC products are then sized to specifications and stored in bulk silos or bagged for transportation to customers. Carmeuse offers a wide variety of GCC product sizes and delivery from many locations to fit your needs.
Specifications
Due to the chemical composition of calcium carbonate, it is used in a wide variety of products and applications. Particle size, chemical purity, and color are often the determining factors in selecting the appropriate GCC for a specific application. Basic specifications are listed for your convenience but please contact us by email or phone for further guidance.
Typical Specifications:
Purity: Typical ranges 95% CaCO3, under 3% MgCO3, under 2% SiO2
Sizing: Range from granular animal feed 4M-8M down to 7um
Uses for Ground Calcium Carbonate
Ground calcium carbonate is used in countless products that you interact with daily. Ground calcium carbonate is often used to increase durability and reduce costs by displacing or “extending” other more expensive raw materials. It is the ideal extender or filler as it has low absorption qualities, numerous particle sizes available and can be bright in color when needed.
Common uses of ground calcium carbonate:
- Luxury Vinyl Tile – PVC Extender
- Carpet Backing- Latex Extender
- Roofing Materials- Asphalt Mineral Filler
- Rubber, Plastics, and PVC
- Paint, Caulk, Grout, and Joint Compounds
- Cement Replacement in Concrete up to 15%
- Animal Feed - Calcium Source
PREMIACAL® - Ground Calcium Carbonate Engineered for Concrete
Carmeuse has ground calcium carbonate specifically engineered for improving the durability, appearance, and cost of concrete without reducing its mechanical properties called PREMIACAL®. PREMIACAL® will enhance your concrete, both physically and chemically, while reducing costs and environmental impacts. Replacing a portion of cement in a concrete mix to improve various characteristics has been an industry standard for decades. As production and availability of previously abundant supplemental cementitious materials has changed drastically, it is time to consider a more consistent replacement. PREMIACAL®, by Carmeuse, was designed to provide consistent results along with reliable supply.
