Carmeuse Grand River aims to get them while young for a career in STEM
Continuing its outreach to local school students, Carmeuse Grand River employees Lee Soukup and Harry Harris staffed a Carmeuse booth at the Firestone/Goodyear STEM Career Day for middle school students in grades 6-8. The April 30th event at Firestone High School, Akron, OH, followed a similar event in March for high school students.
Firestone/Goodyear’s STEM Career Days aim to inspire young people in their formative years (grades 6 through 12) to pursue opportunities, both educationally and professionally, that exist in various science, technology, engineering, and mathematics disciplines.
The events provide students with an opportunity to network with and learn directly from local business partners, such as Carmeuse. Students are encouraged to talk with STEM professionals to find out what it’s like being an engineer or scientist on a day-to-day basis, as well as asking about more practical concerns, like where they went to college.
“We’re always happy to talk to young people about our careers and the lessons we’ve learned along the way,” said Soukup, a Plant Process Engineer at Grand River and graduate of Cleveland State University with a BSc in Chemical Engineering. “Hopefully, we were able to overturn some of the misconceptions around our subjects and motivate the kids we met to consider a rewarding career in a STEM field.”
