Carmeuse Port Inland stands up against hunger

Carmeuse Port Inland stands up against hunger

Hunger is an issue that affects millions of American families each year. Joining the fight against food poverty, the Carmeuse Port Inland Operation in Manistique, MI, sponsored September’s Feeding America Food Truck visit to Schoolcraft County.

“The Feeding America Food Truck comes to Manistique typically once a month and is sponsored by businesses from the community,” said Shena Meffer, Administrative Assistant at Port Inland, who organized the involvement by Carmeuse.

The truck typically provides hundreds of food boxes to local families with a semi-trailer bringing the parcels to the distribution site in Manistique. It was seeing this need that galvanized Meffer and her Port Inland colleagues to action with the company donating $1800.00 to support the September visit.

“If businesses do not sponsor it, it does not show up,” explained Meffer.

The Manistique food truck is part of Feeding America, whose network of foodbanks, pantries and meal programs serve 40 million people each year, with over 4.3 billion meals. In West Michigan alone, the organization distributes an average of 21 million meals across 40 counties. In doing so, they help people live more secure and stable lives.

That’s a mission echoed by Meffer, who explained that the Port Inland Operation “chose to sponsor the food truck in the hopes of reducing food insecurity within our community.”
