Carmeuse Winchester honors service personnel on Veterans Day
This past Veterans Day, the Carmeuse Winchester Operation, VA, joined the rest of the country in honoring those men and women who have served in the US military. Those recognized at the Virginia plants included Bill Hyman, a retiring warehouser, who served for 20 years in the US Navy. Hyman raised the flag for his last Veterans Day with Carmeuse.
Originally established in 1919 as Armistice Day to mark the end of World War I, it was renamed Veterans Day after World War II to celebrate the service of military veterans in all conflicts.
“To us in America, the reflections of Armistice Day will be filled with solemn pride in the heroism of those who died in the country’s service,” said President Woodrow Wilson in a message to mark that first Armistice Day. It is a solemn pride that continues to this day, and is shared by Carmeuse—a company that began life in Belgium in 1860, surviving the sorrows of world wars twice fought on Belgian soil.
In the US, Carmeuse has a long history of hiring military veterans who form a valued talent pool for the company. At this time of year, Carmeuse operations stop to salute their service men and women and reflect on the sacrifices made by those who did not come home.
“We have a big heart for veterans,” said April Garland, Human Resources Manager at the Carmeuse Chatsworth Operations, GA, summing up the attitude that runs through Carmeuse. At Chatsworth, for example, a new flag pole was recently installed: a tangible symbol of the company’s appreciation for and pride in its veterans.
