Huron River Fest returns with a bang

After last year’s event was cancelled due to COVID-19, the Huron River Fest was back for a one-day event on 10 July. The Carmeuse Huron Operation lent its support to the event, sponsoring the Huron River Fest 5K and Fun Run, and the Huron River Fest Fireworks.

The Huron River Fest 5K is the first of five races that make up the Huron 5K Series. As a sponsor of the series, the Huron Operation provided bottled water for the event, while employees also volunteered their time on the day of the race. Dave Thompson, Operations Associate, his wife, Kelly, and Christine Mollison, Site Coordinator, handed out pre-registration packs to the runners before the race, and congratulated runners as they finished, passing out water and snacks.

Particular shout-outs go to Brett Reed, 19, who won the men’s race in a time of 16:19, and to Jadyn Towns, 15, who was the top woman, finishing in 20:05.

After the race, visitors were treated to a program of entertainment that included a parade, performances from the Christian Cloggers Dance Team and Huron High School Cheerleaders, and live music. Providing a suitable end to the festivities, fireworks then illuminated the Huron River – thanks to a donation of $1000 from the Huron Operation.

“The town was packed with onlookers coming out to see the night sky light up!”, said Huron Site Coordinator Mollison. “Spirits were lifted as we return to a sense of normalcy”.
