Lake County students encouraged to ‘Think Manufacturing’
Students from Lake County, OH, were encouraged to consider a career in manufacturing at the “Think Manufacturing” Careers Expo held on October 7th at Mentor High School. The annual event provides an opportunity for students from Grades 8-12 to meet with local manufacturers and businesses and explore post-high school career opportunities.
As one of the local company sponsors, the Carmeuse Grand River Operation exhibited at the event. Brian Horvath and Dwayne Knee represented the Grand River site and were joined by Vickie Kent, Ohio Region HR Manager at Carmeuse.
“The event gives us as a business partner the opportunity to speak with students, make them more aware of our company and role in the community, speak to them about their path for career choices and potential further education needed,” said Kent.
The expo is a collaboration between three local chambers of commerce and the Alliance for Working Together Foundation. Roughly 12 school districts were scheduled to attend throughout the day—and with as much as 50% of students at some schools not going on to college, the event provides an important opportunity for them to prepare for a viable career.
“This is our future,” Christine Weber, president and CEO of the Mentor Area Chamber of Commerce said. “Not every child wants to go to college and these companies are paying for schooling, and training. These kids have the opportunity to make a lot of money and move up the ladder.”
