Winchester Sponsors Local Youth Inline Hockey Rink Project

The Carmeuse Winchester operation donated approximately 1,100 tons of 21B stone, valued at $17,600, to the Top of Virginia Hockey Alliance to support the construction of an outdoor inline hockey rink for Winchester-Frederick County Public Schools. This partnership, along with sponsorships from the Washington Capitals, Stowe Engineering, Glen Mohr Inc. and W&L construction, will provide recreational opportunities for youth to play inline hockey and expand the physical education space for the students at James Wood Middle School.

Carmeuse was approached with a donation request from the Alliance to help in the construction of an asphalt pad and concrete ribbon.

“We jumped at the opportunity to partner with the Top of Virginia Hockey Alliance on this project.  Helping to create an awesome space for this new inline rink and for students in our County is something we were proud to do.  Brad and his Team have been great to work with and we’re excited to see this project come to life” said Logan Thompson, Site Operations Manager.

Top of Virginia Hockey Alliance is a nonprofit, volunteer-based organization focused on providing quality recreational inline hockey programs for the youth in the community, regardless of a child’s skill level and financial situation. The project planning began two years ago and construction began this September after a long fundraising effort.

“Since 2017, many individuals and business partners have generously supported our cause through cash, in-kind and material contributions. Carmeuse is one of our top partners and they have supported our project by donating nearly a thousand tons of stone,” said Brad Veach, President, Top of Virginia Hockey Alliance.

Local businesses and organizations have teamed up on this project that will empower youth in the community by creating a beautiful and accessible rink for hockey and physical education.

“You could say that Carmeuse is providing a strong "foundation" for the future success of our youth hockey program. Without Carmeuse's support, we would not be able to offer this recreational amenity to the youth in our community,” said Veach. “Our volunteers and league parents have enjoyed working closely with Carmeuse staff and appreciate everything that they have done to be a community partner in this venture."
