Description:
Dolomitic Hydrated Lime is used in various industrial applications, agricultural applications, and within building materials like mortar. There are four types of hydrated lime used in building applications: Type N, Type NA, Type S, and Type SA. Carmeuse produces Type S and Type SA.
Benefits:
- Meets ASTM C207 specifications – Type S
- Better workability & elasticity
- Imparts low water penetration or leakage to the finished product
- Flexural strength
- Cost savings over traditional masonry cement
- Adds bond strength and seismic resistance
- Ideal for mixing small or large batches
Type S Hydrated Lime and Type SA Hydrated Lime are available in 50 lb bags, super sacks, or in bulk. For additional information, to view our Product Typical Sheets, or to discuss availability with our sales group, please contact us.

Type S Hydrated Lime vs Type SA Hydrated Lime
Type S Lime or ‘special hydrated lime’ is a hydrated dolomitic lime that is used in various industrial applications, agricultural applications, and within building materials like mortar. It is sometimes also referred to as “Mason’s Lime” or “Finishing Hydrated Lime.” Carmeuse brand names for this product include Miracle Morta-Lok® and Miracle Lime-Cote®. Type S Lime must reach a water retention value minimum of 85%.
Type SA Lime or ‘special air-entraining hydrated lime’ is a hydrated lime that is suitable for use in mortar, in scrath & brown coats of cement plaster, stucco, and addition to Portland-cement concrete. The Carmeuse brand name for this product is Miracle E-Z Spread®.
According to the National Lime Association, no distinction is made between Type S and Type SA lime based upon the nature and source of limestone but the key distinction is the maximum air content of cement-lime mortars. When made with Types SA hydrated lime the maximum air content is 14%; with Types S hydrated lime, 7%.

Product (How We Make It)
Type S dolomitic hydrated lime is produced by adding a controlled amount of water to dolomitic quicklime in a hydrator, operated under elevated pressure. The result is a dry hydrate containing calcium hydroxide (Ca(OH)2) and magnesium hydroxide (Mg(OH)2).
PRESSURE
CaO∙MgO + 2H2O --> Ca(OH)2 + Mg(OH)2 + Heat
To ensure proper storage, dolomitic hydrated lime should be protected from the elements throughout shipping and material handling, until it is needed for your application. For storage and handling solutions for dolomitic hydrated lime, learn about our Carmeuse End-2-End Services.

Uses of Dolomitic Hydrated Lime
Type S Lime can be used in the following applications:
- Adding Elasticity and Durability to Mortar
- Fly Ash Treatment
- Wastewater Treatment
- Chemical Processing
Type SA Lime can be used for mortar in scrath & brown coats of cement plaster, stucco, and addition to Portland-cement concrete.
There are specific safety precautions that must be taken when handling, storing, and using lime in any form. Appropriate safety regulations should be followed at all times. For a full outline of safety guidelines when using hydrated lime, see our Safety Data Sheet.
Type S is a hydrated dolomitic lime.
Dolomitic hydrated lime contains a higher % magnesium and lower % calcium vs high calcium hydrated lime.
