Carmeuse Accelerates Decarbonization Effort with Net-Zero Lime Plant Design
Pittsburgh, PA, May 10, 2023—Carmeuse Americas is excited to announce that we have been selected by the U.S. Department of Energy to complete the Preliminary Front End Engineering and Design (pre-FEED) study of a commercial scale, advanced carbon capture system that separates CO2 from the lime manufacturing process at our existing operation in Butler, Kentucky.
The design is projected to capture over 400,000 metric tonnes per year of CO2 from the process stream and inject it safely underground on site for long term sequestration (CCS), along with utilizing sustainably sourced biomass in combination with natural gas as the fuel source. Initial objectives include Lime Plant Design, Business Case Analysis, Life Cycle Analysis, Technology Maturation Plan, and Environmental Health and Safety (EH&S) Analysis over an 18-month period.
“This is a significant milestone for Carmeuse as a leader in lime manufacturing as we strive to produce lime that is carbon neutral” says Cem Gercek, Head of Decarbonization at Carmeuse Americas. Our vision is that we contribute to a better world, and at the core of this Sustainability Vision are social, environmental and economic efforts. "Carmeuse group is active in developing solutions supporting decarbonization through numerous applications across various industries, and this project involves utilization of one of those techniques supporting our internal goal of being carbon neutral by 2050" says Jeff Bittner, Senior Vice President of Operations.
We would like to especially thank our partner Electricore for their support in preparing a successful application package.
